Get the look: Elizabeth Olsen

Whenever I stumble upon a great outfit that is so my style, I immediately look for ways I can recreate, buy or incorporate the pieces into my own wardrobe – and I know I’m not the only one that does this, so I thought I’d share my celebrity inspired wardrobe finds…

If you didn’t already catch it, I am an admirer of Elizabeth’s style. Earlier this month, I saw this photo of her at a London film premier and just loved it! Simple, sleek, sophisticated, but still a splash of sexy.

Keeping your skin hydrated through the seasons…

It is one of the most common questions and complaints I hear… your skin is getting dry, chapped, flaky, taught and irritated as the weather cools down.

The reason this happens is simple, the humidity drop or becomes non-existent. Your skin has to contend with the cool air and wind outside, and the dry air inside. When you’re outdoors/indoors the dry air is actually drawing the moisture out of your skin, attempting to hydrate the environment around you, but luckily there are plenty of ways you can fight off the parched skin feeling.

  • Drink MORE water – Keep your body hydrated from the inside out.
  • Avoid drying cleansers – Opt for cleansers that say cream, oil, gentle, extra moisturizing, hydrating and 24 hour moisture.
  • Switch to a more gentle exfoliant – It is important to exfoliate regularly for healthy skin cell turnover and appearance, and while instinct may tell you to abandon your exfoliant, that would only make skin appear dull, and dead-dry skin more obvious. As always for exfoliation, ensure you follow up with proper moisturization.
  • If you do not already, use an oil before your moisturizer at night – Apply the oil to your body while you are still in the shower or immediately after, without letting your skin dry. The same goes for your face, apply (a non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) oil) after cleansing to slightly damp skin. Oils help lock in moisture. Follow up with your normal body and face moisturizers.
  • Cool down your shower – I know, I know, who doesn’t love a hot shower in the Fall/Winter, but long showers in hot water are a serious no-no for your skin. The hot water, especially for extended periods of time, breaks down the lipid barrier in your skin – meaning it is damaging the fatty-moisture layer in your skin. Take a shorter warm shower and be sure to follow up with proper moisturization.
  • Continue to apply SPF Moisturizer- Enough said. It does not matter that the sun is hiding behind the overcast or snow clouds.
  • Embrace the scarf (and gloves) – They are fashionable and protect your skin from the cool wind.
  • Consider adding a humidifier – As stated before, the humidity (moisture in the air outside and) indoors has dropped, so investing in a humidifier helps put that moisture back into the air.
  • Switch to a thicker/heavier moisturizer – Try a body butter or cream, as opposed to lotion. If your face can handle a heavier non-comedogenic moisturizer, definitely try one. If it can’t, boost your current face moisturizer with a serum or oil.
  • Use primer day AND night – Yes, as in foundation primer. It works great in cooler months too – not just when you want to avoid your make-up melting off. Using an oil-free foundation primer during the day adds a barrier sealing in the moisture in your skin from the cool air and wind outside. Using the primer at night, after cleansing and apply your facial oil/moisturizer, adds a barrier sealing in the moisture and products, from the dry air indoors.
  • Use a nail treatment – Just as with your skin, your nails also have it rough in the cooler months. Use a nail oil, or vaseline, and a strengthening nail protein polish treatment or base coat.
  • Pamper your feet – After your shower, apply a foot cream and your favorite socks, to keep your feet hydrated and soft.
  • Find your Super Lip Balm – Enough said. Oh – lips need to be exfoliated too! Avoid licking your lips, the enzymes in your saliva that are used to breakdown food will only dry your lips more.
  • Ditch products with alcohol – This should be done year around in my opinion. Opt for alcohol-free toners, treatments and cleansers.
  • Bring out the foundation – No need to stick to the lightweight tinted moisturizer, unless you really want to. As always, allow your moisturizer to sink in for a few minutes and add a primer for more skin protection.
  • Mist throughout the day – Try facial mists like MAC Fix + or Evian Spray Brumisateur Mineral Water. Spray throughout the day, it feels good and gives your skin a mini moisture boost.

Product Spotlight: Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque

I have finally found my holy grail of face masques!!

About a month ago, my skin was acting up majorly (which is not normal for me) and I was in need of something that would clear up the issue and quickly! I wasn’t interested in using spot treatments, anything harsh or drying, and I did not want to wait to wash away to problem with my normal cleansers – so I opted to look for a super mask!

I found it! Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque 🙂

Being a Kiehl’s lover, I don’t know how I hadn’t discovered this one yet… I have tried A LOT of masks/masques, but none have come close being the type of miracle this one is.

Kiehl’s Claims:

Our Rare Earth masque helps purify and detoxify skin while minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores. Formulated with Amazonian White Clay to gently draw out oil, dirt and toxins that can clog pores. The addition of Oatmeal and Aloe Vera will help soothe, hydrate and protect sensitive skin.

This thoroughly cleansing masque may be used for normal to oily skin types to help eliminate debris and dead surface skin-cell accumulation that can clog pores and leave skin dull-looking. With ingredients sourced from the Marajo Island at the mouth of the Amazon River, this unique formula is rich in minerals and helps eliminate surface toxins from skin. Our deep cleansing masque helps to purify skin, leaving the appearance of pores minimized and skin refined.

Everything they claim has been true for me!

The best thing I like about this masque is that it combines deep cleansing with gentleness. As with many clay based masks, they can be immediately drying or irritating to skin – but not so with this one.

You should apply a thin layer on cleansed – damp skin and allow to dry fully, about 10 minutes, then remove with a warm wet towel and pat dry. It applies very easily – glides on and a little goes a long way. As with many Kiehl’s products, it has the expected natural-earth-clay scent of the ingredients.

It has a cooling and slightly tingling sensation on the skin, as expected with deep cleansing masques. After you remove the mask, you can see and feel the difference in your skin.

The first night I used this mask, the very next day my skin had cleared up and improved dramatically. I was hooked!

My skin has been doing amazingly well the past month and this has been the only new product I have added to my routine. I use masks once a week and have only chosen to use this one from now on, unless I need to test a mask product.

I would also recommend using this mask as a spot treatment for unexpected or stubborn blemishes. Apply to the spot(s), allow to dry and go to sleep. Wash off in the morning and I can (almost) guarantee that the spot will be gone or at least diminished.

Also, as with all deep cleansing, make sure you properly moisturize after using the masque.

The masque sells for $23.00 (5.0 fl. oz. Jar) and I definitely think it is worth the price tag! Since you apply the masque in a thin layer, I can see the jar easily lasting 4 to 6 months, using it once a week.

MAC Haul

Yay!! I was finally able to buy a few new products, after what seemed like forever, and I just had to get my hands on some products from some of MAC’s new collections.

What I ordered:

  • MAC Fix + (long-time favorite! I use this spray daily)
  • “Jungle Camouflage” Face Kit (From the Carine Roitfeld Collection)
  • “Eden Rouge” Mattene Lipstick (From the Styleseeker Collection)
  • “Copper Beech” Pro Sculpting Cream (From the Face & Body Collection)
  • “Coffee Walnut” Pro Sculpting Cream (From the Face & Body Collection)
  • “Pure Sculpture” Pro Sculpting Cream (From the Face & Body Collection)
  • “Day Gleam” – NC30 shade – Pressed Pigment (From the Face & Body Collection)

A compact that showcases Carine Roitfeld’s sophisticated and seductive smoky eye and rouged cheek. Features: Dew, “Camo,” Bad Lieutenant and Carbon Eye Shadows, and Cremeblend Blush in Bootcamp Bronze. Limited edition.

My Thoughts:

  • The packaging is cute and compact, plus it includes a mirror. This kit would be great for travel.
  • Loving the cremeblend blush/bronzer! Blends beautifully, sheer but buildable, with a natural finish.
  • I chose the “Jungle Camouflage” because it is the cool (yellow) toned kit. Also comes in “Desert Camouflage” which is a warm (pink) toned kit.

With its streamlined design, this new slimline lipcolour, features the traditional glamour properties of a matte lipstick – intense colour and semi-matte velvety finish – while offering a creamier, softer, more glide-on application. Non-caking, non drying. Moisturizing and incredibly wearable yet absolutely matte.

My thoughts:

  • LOVE this lipstick – MAC really should make the mattene lipsticks part of the permanent line.
  • Eden Rouge is a bright blue red! Would be great on probably every skin tone. Read more on bold lips and application here.
  •  I would not classify it as a true matte lipstick. It has a slight semi-matte sheen to it, which I prefer even more.
  • Highly pigmented, about 85% opaque. Non-drying, so great if you are looking for the matte look but without your lips drying out.
  • Good staying power, but will still transfer. Add liner to extend wear.

A cream-to-powder formula for sculpting and shaping key features. Silky-smooth, easy-to-blend and neutrally-shaded. Apply where extra dimension is needed, eyelids included. Provides moist, skin-soothing, natural-looking sheer-to-medium buildable coverage.

My thoughts:

  • I have been looking for a product just like this for a long time now and I’m not disappointed!! 🙂
  • Copper Beech and Pure Sculpture look similar, but when applied are very different shades.
  • Love the formula. It is described as cream-to-powder, but it does not have a very powdery finish, but enough that it self-sets.
  • Natural finish, with a sheer application, but very buildable without caking.

An intensely creamy highlighter offering extreme pearlescence and versatility of finish. Apply dry for a high shine, or on damp skin for a dramatic wet look. Provides eye-catching sheer-to-moderate buildable coverage and natural dimension finish. Pressed Pigment is delicate. Please handle with care.

My thoughts:

  • I was a little wary of purchasing this one at first, but I am glad I did. Day Gleam is described as an NC30 shade.
  • This product is not for the inexperienced and a light hand is suggested.
  • May look a bit scary to the more novice make-up user. I would recommend those unfamiliar with pigments, pressed pigments and highlighters should pass on purchasing this product.
  • Does have a high “glitter/shimmer” content, but the more you work the product the smoother it looks. Works very well with damp brushes or on damp skin.

Overall I’m very excited to wear and work with these new products ♥

Side note: I have been planning to do a subscriber giveaway for a while now and it is going to be awesome!! So stay tuned, I will probably be announcing it next month 🙂
